Dewi Jones and Sa'ad Mansoor gained substantial experience of simulation, control and stability studies for
hydroelectric Plant when working on contracts for the First Hydro Company at its Ffestiniog
and Dinorwig installations in North Wales. With its six 300MW-rated pump turbines, Dinorwig is one of the world's largest
fast-response pumped storage stations. Some of our projects were:
- Building a detailed dynamic model of the governors for Dinorwig power station, used to identify conditions
causing intermittent occurrence of large oscillations in generated power.
- Constructing a real-time simulator for run-up of a turbine/generator at Ffestiniog; this was used for rapid debugging and testing of
a new governor, thus minimising Unit down-time.
- Investigating advanced techniques for multivariable control, generalised predictive control (GPC) and
predictive feed-forward for improving response times and delivery of power to the national Grid.
- Using the unique data available from Dinorwig to identify dynamic parameters for the Grid.
